Tools for Trauma Informed Living

Curated articles, guides, and practices to deepen your understanding of trauma-informed care — whether you're a professional, a caregiver, or someone on your own path.

Grounding practices

Simple, evidence-based techniques you can use right now to regulate your nervous system.

1

5-4-3-2-1 sensory grounding

Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This technique anchors you to the present moment.

2

Box breathing

Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat 4 times. Activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

3

Safe place visualization

Close your eyes and picture a place — real or imagined — where you feel completely safe. Engage all your senses to build the image.
